Story by Carlos Afanou

Ghanaians especially sellers of hand sanitizers has been called upon to be sensitive to their brother’s plights as the country fight against the spread of Cornovirus also known as COVID-19.

The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Cynthia Mamle Morrison made the call during a training session for women in making hand sanitizer at the premises of the Ministry in Accra.

Speaking further, she expressed her worry over the high price of hand sanitizers that, it is not right for traders to capitalize on COVID-19 crisis to act as such.

This act according to her interferes with the global goal of fighting the spread of the virus.

Stressing that, “I don’t think this is the right time for us to make money out of this thing that has invaded our community”.

The immediate rise in price of the product she bemoaned will affect a lot of Ghanaians that, many won’t be able to afford it.

“We realize that now the prices are skyrocketing we cannot afford to buy because what we used to buy for GH¢6 and GH¢8 is now going for GH¢85 and GH¢100,” she lamented.

However, Mrs. Morrison unveiled the role of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection in fighting the spread of the virus, which is; educating people to make their own sanitizers and not be victims of sanitizer over-pricing.

“The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is a mother Ministry so we are taking steps to teach the whole country how to prepare homemade sanitizers by using alcohol (ethanol) as well glycerine,” she pointed out.

She also suggested that Ghanaians should resort to chewing cocoa beans as it can help boost their immune systems, which is a requisite for fighting the virus.

“We have heard that we have to build our immune systems so it can fight against this virus, how do we build our immune systems? We have cocoa in Ghana, the bitter cocoa also builds our immune system”, she advised.

Adding “We can even chew the cocoa beans or buy the powdered cocoa, prepare it as breakfast, lunch, and for supper to boost our immune system,” she advocated.
